Canadian Malartic Mine (CMM) is the largest open-pit gold mine in Canada. In 2019, it
produced 334,596 oz of gold. The mine’s extraction activities span approximately 24 km2 (5930
acres) and many operations are carried less than 400 meters (1312 ft) from the nearest
residential dwellings at the City of Malaric. Operating a mine in such an urban environment
brings several issues and controlling noise emissions 24/7, rain or shine, is definitely one of the
toughest challenges to tackle.
Since 2013, several research projects have been undertaken by Soft dB in order to develop innovative
and perfectly integrated noise monitoring techniques that are specially tailored for the mining industry.
From these initiatives, several in-house software and instruments to manage one of the largest noise
monitoring networks in Canada have been developed, where the CMM site is continuously monitored,
24/7 and 365 days a year.
Among several R&D projects carried out over the years, Soft dB has developed state-of-the-art artificial
intelligence tools that allow real-time identification of the sound events occurring at the several
monitoring points within the CMM site. These advanced AI algorithms are integrated to Soft monitoring
platform in order to create an accurate alarm/reporting framework for CMM. Once the sound events
have been properly identified, the platform notifies the user if a vibratory or sound event has been
caused by their activities or from external sources such as birds, earthquakes, airplanes, etc. By knowing
the exact cause of the event, the operations of the mines can be accurately modified to achieve the
noise and vibration targets established by the province and the City of Malartic. Thus, high operational
performance and reduced costs can be accomplished.
Improvements in sound management performance in recent years have been significant and have
helped foster the harmony between the mining industry and people living in nearby communities.
